About BAPHR

The Bay Area Physicians for Human Rights (BAPHR) is the world’s first organization of gay physicians, created in 1977 to advance the health and wellness of the LGBTQ community and to support the careers of LGBTQ medical professionals.

Our members include physicians, dentists, and allied health professionals working in diverse settings—from academic institutions to private practice—as well as community members and nonprofit leaders who share our mission. Membership is open to all who are committed to improving LGBTQ health and supporting our community.

Each month, BAPHR hosts educational forums and professional development gatherings (formerly known as “mixers”). These events create a safe, welcoming space where healthcare professionals and community allies come together to exchange knowledge, share resources, and strengthen connections that improve health outcomes for LGBTQ people.

Every June, during Pride month, we hold a special program honoring BAPHR’s historical leadership during the AIDS crisis, when our members played a vital role in patient care, prevention, and education.

Through the BAPHR Foundation, we also sponsor grants for community health nonprofits and run a mentorship program pairing medical trainees with experienced LGBTQ healthcare professionals.

For nearly five decades, BAPHR has remained a place where healthcare providers, community members, and nonprofit leaders can join together to learn, connect, and improve health outcomes for the LGBTQ community.
